Reflections

I realize that we have readers from around the world, but allow me a bit of reflection…

July 4th will be the 238th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. It’s a three day weekend this year, so please take the time to be extra careful in your travels. At the same time, let’s take the time to remember what made, and continues to make, America great.

Speaking of the Declaration, in reading it, I am struck by the last line: “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.” The fifty-six signers of that document were lawyers, landowners, merchants…they were men of means. Yet they knew that, by signing the Declaration of Independence, they were committing treason, an act that was punishable by death.

Over the course of the American Revolution, many of the signers lost their lives. Many also lost their fortunes. But none lost their sacred Honor. And that brings me to mystery shopping. For the most part, the relationships we build and nurture with schedulers occur by e-mail. A smaller percentage probably happen by phone. And probably the smallest amount occur at mystery shopping conferences. The thread that makes our relationships with the schedulers work is our sacred honor. It’s trust, a trust that is built over time, that allows us to become successful as shoppers. The trust that we will do the job to the best of our ability. And that trust is founded on our sacred honor. Honor is such a simple word, and yet it is the foundation on which our craft of mystery shopping is built.
